DIY How To Guides

Step 2 – Insert Ribbon.

4. Buy at least 1/2 meter of ribbon. I used a 5mm version of the ribbed variety, which is actually called Grosgrain ribbon. The amount and width of ribbon depends on your spine width and space which depends on the amount of pages your book has. I had 60 pages and used 5 x 5mm ribbons, and it was a close fit.

5. Glue all the ribbons, in the order in which you want them to be used in the book, together with clear glue, a length of about 5cm and wait for this to dry. You could also stitch them together for a studier version.

6. Once the ribbon bundle is dry, glue it to the middle of the spine, about 5cm down the book. Open the book as wide as it can go (without bending the cover, of course) and tape the edges of the ribbon to the book, in as many places as possible, being careful no to add to the height of the ribbon bundle – in other words, you need to put a few well placed strips of tape.

** Make sure the ribbon is loose at least 5mm from the top of the book, you can use the printed cover overlap as a guide here.**
